The Rift
The long, straight gash of the Jordan Valley, deepening at the Dead Sea, is one of several signs that the earth's surface is unstable. Volcanic activity and changes in the structure are still going on. The Jordan rift has slipped down between two parallel 'faults' to produce the deepest natural depression in the world.
The shore of the Sea of Galilee is 660 ft/200 meters below sea level. The deepest point of the Dead Sea is more than 2,600 ft/800 meters below sea level, despite the deposits brought down by the River Jordan for thousands of years. Hot springs and mineral-stained rocks along sides of the rift show that the area is still geologically active.
