The 'Shephelah' or Piedmont
Between the coastlands and upland is an area of low foothills formerly covered by forests of sycamores. When the Philistines fought the Israelites the hils formed a kind of noman's-land, where there were constant skirmishes. For either side to attack the other, it was necessary to pass through the Sephelah. Most of the routes through it were therefore fortified or guarded. Today, much of it is cultivated.
